BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Here is an important message from BSA: Black hair was seen as a symbol of a person's identity, Hair was a sacred tool of communication in ancient African societies. "It wasn't about a style, it was a form of protest to say, I am not going to straighten my hair anymore to fit Eurocentric beauty standards, and black hair was also part of a new culture that was springing up here in Canada. Back in the early 1940s, Viola Desmond, a Canadian civil rights leader, started the first school of hairdressing of its kind in Nova Scotia after being rejected from all of the local beautician schools simply because she was Black.
