Good evening to our SMHS families,
We are writing to inform you that the Grey Bruce Public Health Unit is currently investigating a confirmed positive case of COVID-19 in our school community. Understandably, for privacy reasons, the identity of this individual will not be disclosed. This individual has been directed by the Health Unit to self-isolate for 10 days.
We recognize that this information is concerning for families and we want to assure you that we are working with Public Health and taking all appropriate steps for the health, safety and well-being of our school community.
A letter from the Health Unit has already been sent out (through the school) to all students, staff, and families who are deemed a close contact to this COVID-19 case. If you or your child has not received the letter or ARE NOT CONTACTED by the Health Unit, your child HAS NOT BEEN CONSIDERED a close contact. There is no further action.
However, all SMHS students and staff are asked to monitor their health. If symptoms consistent with COVID-19 develop, please contact your primary health care provider or visit a COVID-19 Assessment Centre.
We understand that the risk to others at the school is low because of the health and safety measures that are in place, which include mask wearing and frequent hand sanitizing.
Our school will remain open for those who have not been identified as close contacts. Custodians will disinfect our school before we return to in-class instruction. SMHS will work with students and families to ensure learning continues for those who are self-isolating.
The individual who tested positive as well as all close contacts must
- complete their isolation period AND
- be able to pass the COVID-19 School Screening Tool AND
- be symptom free for 24 hours, before returning to school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you,
Mike Kirby
