Mustang’s Football

Mustangs blank Wolves to win seventh-straight BAA football title

The St. Mary’s Mustangs high school football dynasty lives on.

The ‘Stangs shutout cross-city rival Owen Sound District 9-0 to win a seventh-straight Bluewater Athletic Association football title Friday afternoon at Victoria Park.

The home crowd wouldn’t have to wait too long for a reason to cheer. Midway through the first quarter Jack Diaz scampered down the sideline 73 yards on a counter play to put St. Mary’s up 6-0 after a blocked extra point.

In the second half, Tanner Hamill’s 13-yard field goal spotted the ‘Stangs a 9-0 lead.

St. Mary’s defence snuffed out any comeback hopes Owen Sound might have in the fourth quarter. Edwin Keeshig recorded back-to-back sacks to force an Owen Sound punt. On the next drive Keeshig flew into the backfield and blew up a sweep. Ben Duwyn picked off OSD on the Mustangs last defensive snap of the game to kick off the celebrations. He was given the Georgian Bay Football Officials Association award for player of the game.
