Chaplaincy at St. Mary's

2017 Chaplain's Message for October

Welcome to October, it’s hard to believe the first month of school has already come and gone.

A few highlights to share from September include three wonderful masses at St. Mary’s parish for all students.  We are grateful that Father Kuzma and Brother Paul are able to share their time with the students and celebrate Mass with us.

Our grade 12 graduating class attended a religion/graduation retreat in September at Word of Life Camp.  Here, the students took part in a fun filled day with a variety of activities involving teamwork and cooperation.

Class religion retreats will continue into October.  Our grade 11 religion classes will be visiting to Saugeen First Nation on Wednesday October 4th with a focus on Native education, tradition and spirituality.  Our grade 10 religion classes will visit Silver Lake Camp on Wednesday October 11th with a focus on relationships.  While our grade 9 religion classes will visit Silver Lake Camp on Wednesday October 18th with a focus on the beatitudes, as taught by Jesus in Matthew 5.

We have begun our annual St. Mary’s high school Thanksgiving food drive.  All proceeds will be delivered to the St. Mary’s Parish food bank.  Please consider contributing non-perishable foods that meet Canada’s healthy food guide.  Again, this year our Student Council will donate a pizza party to the homeroom class that has the most amount of healthy non-perishable food donated.  Thank you for your generosity.  Our school partners with the Farm Credit of Canada (FCC) to help run our food drive. This past year FCC donated $1000.00 to our lunch program to help foster our partnership and support our school initiatives.  Thank you FCC!!

On Friday October 13th we have our annual Toronto Outreach trip.  On this trip, students take a guided walking tour of Toronto’s East end handing out lunches and clothing to the homeless and needy.  This exposure has helped student’s affirm our Catholic duties regarding social justice by raising a heightened awareness of poverty beyond Owen Sound.  We hope to fill the bus with 45 students based on first paid.  We will plan to have another trip in the spring.  A reminder for students to pack their own lunch as well as at least two lunches to distribute throughout the day.  Another reminder, be prepared to carry any clothing donations that you plan to bring along.

Our March break mission trip to Nicaragua is beginning to take shape.  There are only a few spots left, if you are serious about attending this year please see myself or Mr. Chiasson, or Ms. Glassier as soon as you can.  Fundraising for those participating will be under shortly.

Naturally, October is month which focusses on Thanksgiving.  Prayer and morning reflection will have a strong theme connected to giving thanks, generosity and keeping an attitude of gratitude!

This month we will continue to build on the Catholic Graduate Expectations and our Catholic Culture of Deep Caring (Virtues). For the month of October the virtue in focus is Acceptance.

Acceptance-  is welcoming and includes everyone as a child of God; each with differing views, talents and beliefs that bring value to our community life.

Dear God,

I praise You for accepting me just as I

am, while calling me to grow in

knowledge and goodness. Help me to be

sensitive to the unique gifts and beliefs

of every person I meet, and always

welcome them with kindness and

understanding. Guide me to contribute

positively to a world which is free of

bullying and prejudice. Teach me to live

in the Spirit of Jesus who welcomed and

accepted everyone.

Amen.

Chaplain's Message

Welcome to a new school year at St. Mary's Catholic High School.

We hope you and your family enjoyed the beautiful summer weather and that everyone is rejuvenated and excited to retrun to school. St. Mary's high school is excited to welcome Fr. Wojciech Kuzma to the Owen Sound Parish. Fr. Kuzma is new to our community and he looks forward to meeting and working with our students. We are planning some school masses for the month of October and we hope to have Fr. Kuzma visit our religion classes as well as having the opportunity for classes to visit the church.

Our grade 10 religion classes have a retreat to Silver Lake Camp on Tuesday September 20th. Students will build on curriculum expectations through relationship building outdoor activities. Bring good outdoor shoes, a litterless lunch, and we will pray for some sunshine.

This year, we are going to try a different approach for our grade 12 religion retreat. On Friday September 23rd, all of the grade 12 students will attend a Religion Retreat at Word of Life Camp. Good outdoor shoes and sunshine will be needed, but we will be treated to a lunch.

Please consider having your child join us on Thursday October 6 to attend our Toronto Outreach trip. This trip is becoming known as a very influential excursion offered at St. Mary's High School. On  this trip, students take a guided walking tour of Toronto's East end handing out lunches and clothing to the homeless and needy. This exposure has helped student's affirm our Catholic duties regarding social justice by raising a heightened awareness of poverty beyond Owen Sound.

As always, a primary focus for this school year is to be centered in Christ in all that we do at St. Mary's Catholic High School. Acting on the Gospel teachings as above is only one of the ways the St. Mary's staff attempts to help develop your child. As in the past, we will be using the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations and our Catholic Culture of Deep Caring Virtues in every dimension of the students' learning experience, giving particular focus to social justice  and living a faith-filled life. For the month of September the virtue is Respect and Reverence.

Good luck this fall with your learning, and your personal and spiritual development for further information visit www.bgcdsb.org

Mission Trip 2017 is to Nicaragua!

Both Mr. Chiasson and I are very excited to announce an international mission trip for St. Mary's High School Students. In March 2017, interested students will participate in a mission trip to Chinandega, Nicaragua. This mission trip offers a large number of opportunities for students to cater to the needs of a homeless community.

Students will support education and teach English to school aged children. Students will also help build badly needed living accommodations, provide support and care in a medical facility, visit and feed residents of a local dump community and give our most valuable asset - time - to the children of Nicaragua.

Please see myself or Mr. Chiasson if you are interested in spending your March break in Nicaragua!!
